Here are a few tips for creating effective notices for organizations.

Creating an organization listing

In order to post a notice using an organization name, the name must be entered into our database. Names are entered in one of two ways: a representative of an organization makes a request, or we do it while creating an introductory notice (which is why you should search for the name before making a request).

An organization can request to be listed by selecting "List an organization name" when searching or posting from any main category page. In your request, please tell us the exact spelling of the organization name, any Web site address, your name and any contact information. We will email you when it has been entered, usually within 24 hours.

Note: sometimes an acronym is as familiar, or more familiar than the complete name, for example, the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). Keep in mind that if you decide to use an acronym, that our database search does not recognize names with fewer than 4 characters (e.g. ABC).

When entering an organization name, you will be asked to associate the name with up to three Area of Interest.

Creating a title

Notice titles are limited to 70 characters, so choose your words carefully. Include relevant information that is not used in the main page search criteria of the category you are posting in. For example, don't bother using country, state, or city names. Also, you can search for words in the notice title in some categories.

Selecting an Area of Interest

Organization names and notices are associated with Area of Interest (AOI) separately. That is, an organization  whose AOI is "Ecology, Environment," for example, may present an art auction for fundraising, and may wish to list that notice with the AOI "Art, Culture" when creating the posting. People searching for notices with an AOI "Art, Culture" and organizations with AOI "Ecology, Environment" will find the same notice.

Text body

You are not limited in the number of characters in the body of the notice, but keep it reasonable or you may loose the interest of the reader.

Contact information

There are no required fields for contact information.

Including a graphic

The use of pictures can make your notice more informative and interesting to view. The categories, media, and merchandise use graphics on the main page. Because we store these pictures on our server, we must insist that they be less than 20 Kbytes in size. Go here for help in managing pictures for posting.

Resource notices

Most organizations represent some form of resource and therefore can maintain a notice in this category.

Categories for organizations

Notices can be posted with an organization name in ten of the twelve categories (just not personals and resumes). Of these ten, eight have no posting fee (housing and jobs have a fee). Submitting an organization name when first posting is when the listed name and Area of Interest is determined; you only do this once.

One way to begin using the postanotice bulletin board is to first post in resources. Once that is done, consider the other nine categories to see if they are appropriate. Does your organization have any: activities, community function, events, housing, jobs, media forms like a journal, scheduled meetings open to the public, merchandise, or services? If it does, consider posting notices for those categories.

Your organization's notices all on one page

Members and visitors to postanotice can search for notices about your organization and display all of them on one page. Click Organization notice boards & Area of Interest, and either enter an organization name, or an Area of Interest. Click "Search" and select the organization to display its notices.

Required fields

The absolute minimum number of required fields for posting is three - the title, text body, and the posting email address.
